President's son ties the knot in Taipei
The couple were served dishes with Taiwanese ingredients rather than shark's fin soup, and observed all the small rituals of a traditional Taiwanese wedding.

Beaming and shedding happy tears, the first family formally yesterday welcomed a new member into their clan as Chen Chih-chung,the only son of President Chen Shui-bian , tied the knot in a ceremonial wedding with Huang Jui-ching.
The wedding banquet began at noon at Taipei's Sheraton Hotel, with some 500 guests invited to share the occasion with the first family. Aside from the newlyweds' relatives and friends, attending dignitaries included the heads of the five branches of government, Vice President Annette Lu and Academia Sinica President Lee Yuan-tseh.
Chen Chih-chung, who obtained a master's degree in law from the University of California at Berkeley last month, will travel to the US with his wife, where they will continue their studies.

Chen Chih-chung, left, yesterday holds the limousine door for his bride, Huang Rui-jing.

Comparison of tallest buildings in the world to Taipei 101

  • This diagram shows height to tip of the tallest structural elements in each building. As such, it is accurate, and the Sears Tower is the tallest habitable building in the world. Using the official method of ranking heights, which counts decorative spires but not antennas, the tallest towers go in order from Tapei 101, Petronas Towers, and then the Sears Tower. Sears tower has the most floors at 108, and has a higher roof than the roof of the Petronas Towers.
  • It's true that there are many different ways of determining what the world's tallest tower is. Do you count from the foundation, or the ground level, or sea level? Does the antenna count? Do you just count up to the highest inhabitable floor? Does the Space Needle count? There are several buildings that could be the world's tallest, depending on how you look at it. The most wonderful view of Taipei-Taipei 101

Taipei 101 is a 106-floor skyscraper in Xenia District, Taipei, Taiwan. Its original name was Taipei Financial Center, based on its official Chinese name: the Taipei International Financial Building. It is the tallest building in the world by three of the four standards designated by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.

External elevation

Taipei 101 has 101 stories above ground (hence the name) and five under ground.

The building holds the records for:

  • Ground to structural top: 508 m (1667 ft), a record formerly held by the Petronas Twin Towers at 452 m (1483ft).
  • Ground to roof: 448 m (1470 ft). Formerly held by the Sears Tower (442 m = 1454ft)
  • Ground to highest occupied floor: 438 m (1437 ft). Formerly held by the Sears Tower.

It does not hold the record for

  • Ground to pinnacle, which is held by the Sears Tower 529 m (1703ft).

Note: Toronto's CN Tower (553 m) is excluded from these records because it is not a "habitable building", which is defined as a frame structure made with floors and walls throughout. The CN remains the world's tallest free-standing structure on land. The KVLY-TV mast near Mayville, North Dakota, is taller still at 629 m (2,063 ft), but is guyed by cables.

Taipei 101's roof was completed on July 1, 2003. In a ceremony presided over by Mayor Ma Ying-jeou, the pinnacle was fitted on October 17, 2003, allowing it to surpass the Petronas Towers by 50 meters (165 feet). (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/3200160.stm) Its records may be surpassed by several buildings planned for completion before 2009, including Union Square Phase 7 in Hong Kong, Shanghai World Financial Center, Freedom Tower in New York City, and Burj Dubai in the U.A.E..

Introduction of Taiwan

Taiwan

Population
21,730,554

Size
36,225 km²

The capital city of Taiwan is Taipei

(pop. 2,719,293).

About Taiwan

Also known as the Republic of China (ROC), Taiwan is officially a
non-communist province of China. Although neither Taiwan nor China recognizes
the island as an independent country (each considers its government the proper
ruler of all China), its present political situation is de facto independent
with its own democratic government.

Taiwan is an island southeast of mainland China and north of the
Philippines. Formerly known as Formosa, it was occupied by Japan for 50 years,
and it still retains a mixture of Japanese and Chinese culture. Most of its
cities have followed a path of development similar to Japanese cities.

The three largest cities in Taiwan are Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung,
located in the north, middle, and south respectively. Taipei is the capital
and the largest city. Kaohsiung is the second-largest city and Taiwan's
largest port (the 3rd largest in the world).
